In August 2025, Indonesia's retail sales experienced a 3.5% year-on-year increase, a slight deceleration from the 4.7% rise observed in July. This marked the fourth month in a row of annual sales growth, albeit at a reduced rate, largely due to continuing government stimulus initiatives aimed at sustaining household purchasing power. The slower growth trajectory was largely attributed to more tempered rises in the sales sectors of food, beverages, and tobacco (4.8% compared to 5.1% in July), fuel (11.7% versus 14.4%), cultural and recreational goods (2.5% down from 5.2%), and automotive parts and accessories (11.3% as opposed to 12.6%). Meanwhile, there was a reduction in household appliances sales (-1.8% from a previous 3.8%), and a sharper decline in the information and communication equipment sector (-28.9% compared to -12.5%). On a more positive note, clothing sales saw a significant rise (8.3% compared to 0.2%). On a month-to-month basis, retail activity bounced back by 0.6% in August, recovering from a 4.1% drop in July, which was the first monthly increase in five months.
